INTERVIEW: NAGY ANDRAS

0107 Andras Nagy At a recently completed EHF Beach handball Champions Cup in Catania, our men’s team was reinforced with Andras Nagy. Through some numbers, we will try to demonstrate what a big and experienced reinforcement he was. Andras is 30-year old Hungarian with 47 official appearances for Hungarian national team and counting, having reached semifinals at big competitions four times from 2015 to 2017. With his team Beach Stars BHC, he is two-time Hungarian champion and one-time EBT Masters Final finalist. He is modest about his individual achievements and puts team in front of an individual: "Personal awards are not as important as team awards", he says. At the ChC Andras played 6 matches in our jersey and scored 52 points, made 40 assists, blocked 5 shoots and had 7 interceptions. And most important thing for us: Andras is a first foreign player that has ever played for BHC Dubrava. On that note, we made an interview with Andras and hope you will enjoy reading it as we did doing it.

Hello Andras. For a start tell us what is the reason you decided to play for Dubrava at the Champions Cup?
-
I was surprised when Dubrava asked me, but I was really happy about that opportunity. I thought it’s a good possibility to learn a bit different type of beach handball from a Croatian top team!

You didn't know the team before you came to Sicily. What did you expect from the team and from the whole tournament?
-
I already knew some players as an opponent, so I there was no surprise for me that it’s a good team with a big potential. Before the tournament my goal was to reach the quarterfinals and see what can we earn after.

Lets talk about the  tournament... From the point of view that it was the first time our mens team participate on such big event, 7th place is a good result. Are you satisfied with the result or not? Could it be maybe even better?
-
As I said, our goal was to reach the quarterfinals, but we had no luck in the shoot-out against Münster. The 7th place for a first-time-participant team is a great result, but I think every player wanted to go for a medal after the group phase.

You had a very important role in the team. As one of the oldest in the (very young) team you were very bussy on both part of the court - in offence and in the deffence.. how did you handle it?
-
I came to support the team and tried to do my best in offense and in defence. I was happy that I earned such a big role during the matches, sometimes it would have been good to have a second lungs maybe hahaha. I tried to help for the younger guys also, they were really open to cooperate.

Now, 10 days after the tournament, what do you think about the team?
-
I enjoyed every minute with the guys, they are all  great players and characters at the same time. I went to Sicily to get new experiences, but I went home with some new friends and I’m really happy about it.

As you could see in Italy, our girls and boys  are hanging around in their free time too, not only around the court.
-
Its not just like Dubrava has a man and a women team, it’s more like a big Dubrava family. We had
common road trips in the island, which I really enjoyed. The time we spent together was always fun, doesn’t matter who was there!

Do you know about the fact you are a first foreigner who ever played for BHC Dubrava in our 10-years history? How do you feel about that?
-
It’s a great honor to be the first foreigner in a club’s history, I’m really proud on it. I wanted to thank you for every player of both teams, because I’ve felt from the beginning like I was a member of this family since long before. I hope I could give some new impulse for the club and maybe our roads will cross in the future.

Thank you Andras for an interview. Hope it was not the last and only time we meet each other at the beach handball court.

FROM RUSSIA WITH SILVER

0098 moskva2mjestoOur girls return to Croatia with silver around their necks having lost in the final of an extremely strong EBT Tournament held in Russia. They were defeted by Hungarian Multichem Szentendrei NKE, a multiple European Champion with 2:0 (26:25, 24:10).
Moscow Grand Slam is the first ever EBT tournament held in the Russian capitol and the organizers tried and succeeded to organize a tournament on a same level as World and European Cups. It was all televised, with the final day broadcasted in 8 european countries including Croatia (Arena Sport).
Girls got to the final without losing a set. In the first group we had beaten Russian teams Luch, Krasnodar and SSHOR-1 Volgograd. In the second group, and playing excellent, Stalingrad and Stavropolye. In the semifinal we had a rematch with Volgograd. In that match Anja Vida Lukšić, our youngest national team member,  dominated and proved that she is the future of beach handball. She scored 26 points, a surreal number. Ivana Benko added 10 points and Kristina Smiljanić 11 assists. Vanja Perenčević had an amazing defensive performance, having three blocks.
In the final we saw a fantastic first set in which both offences dominated. Our girls had a lead throughout the set and entered the last 90 seconds with a lead of 3 points (25:22).
However two unsuccessful attacks gave the Hungarians the chance to turn things around which they did, winning the set 26:25. In the second set we seemed almost deflated by the shock, their goalkeeper Kokai got hot and there was no return. Still, with this second place our girls once more confirmed they rank in the very top of European beach handball and after already qualifying for the Champions Cup we qualified for one more big European Tournament - EHF Masters Finals.
We have to commend the entire team for a great tournament and especially Petra Lovrenčević for being crowned the best goalkeeper.

CROATIAN CHAMPIONS FOR THE THIRD TIME

0093 Prvakinje2019BHC Dubrava’s womens team won it’s third national championship. After 2015. and 2016. and two years without title the third title came back in a spectacular fashion. In the whole tour they have lost only a single set and have won all three tournaments. With this title they qualified for the Champions cup held in Sicily in October.

Champions are: Kristina Smiljanić, Iva Ercegovac, Simona Hajduk (third title), Dora Krsnik, Marina Bušić, Lukrecija Čurek (second title) Petra Lovrenčević, Andrea Klarić, Tea Ćutunić, Petra Dičak, Anja Vida Lukšić, Vanja Perenčević, Mirna Vučković, Diana Sabljak (first title)

Men’s team failed again. Although they held the first place after winning the first two tournaments and required only a third place finish - that didn’t happen. Two group losses and not entering the semifinal was all it took for Detono to take their twelfth championship. As a consolation prize we get a second place trophy (5th overall, 3rd in a row)

A NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR THE TITLE

0078 final4 varazdinToday marks the beginning of the second Croatian beach handball Final 4. The Kapucinski square will host, just like last year, four of the best teams, both male and female. Today we will have the semifinal matches where we will find out tomorrow's finalists. Other than the prestigious title, teams are fighting for a place on the Champios cup, a competition this will be held in Sicily after four years at Gran Canaria.
Dubrava will play in Varaždin with both male and female team, which are both the no.2 seed. Girls will play in 20:40h against Detono Zagreb, ex European champions who stopped us last year in the same game.In the second semifinal the reigning  champions Kontesa Nera will face Chemo profili Zagreb.
The men's team is still waiting for their first championship which was so close in 2017 when they lost against Detono in the shootout. In the first semifinal Detono will play White Boys - the only team from Dalmatia. The last game on Saturday is reserved for our boys which will look to book a place in the final against Sesvete, just like last year. The game starts at 21:30.
We asked Ivan Dumenčić,  the girls coach and a player, to say a few words: ”We are looking forward to an excellent tournament and we won't try to hide our aspirations. We are not the favourites - in both competitions those are the reigning champions, and we have big obstacles in front of us. Boys showed last year that they deserve to be the champions and we hope luck turns to us this year. Girls are already two time champions and it's a big wish of ours to take the trophy home again so we attempt to make a better result in the Champios Cup than last time which was 3rd place.”
Other than the Final 4 on Friday and Saturday we will have a four nation tournament as a part of the World Cup preparation. It will be held in Russia. On it Croatia will be the defending champion, a title acquired two years ago in Hungary. On the tournament, other than our team, we will see Oman, Hungary and Serbia.
All in all a great invitation to see some great beach handball.

A SUCCESSFUL SEASON ENTRY

0085 jarun2018The 11th edition of Jarun cup was completed yesterday with two great finals, both broadcasted at Sportska TV. With superb management, AKRP Zagreb is setting new standards when it comes to EBT tours, and we were especially taken by live statistics throughout all five days. Men's gold is won by Ekaterinodar while the womens champion are Kontesa Nera. Our girl's squad, which was promoting our new name and sponsor (Toyota MHC Dubrava) was second like the previous year.

On their way to the final, girls played eight matches in which they had a score of 6-1, and that loss, as well as the final loss came from Kontesa Nera, proving that their win was well deserved. The girls swept their group with four wins against Detono, BHC Rovinj, Chemo Profili and CAIPIranhas and finished second due to the aforementioned loss to Kontesa Nera giving us a quarterfinal match with Göteborg BHC.A very early start to the game (8:00 am) disrupted our shooting and the match eventually went to the shootout where we, with some luck, secured the semifinal against BHC 2areg.The first set was won by the Serbian team, but in the second set we amped up the defense and had great finishing in attack and eventually win in the shootout by 7:4. In the final we hadn't found defensive solutions to their play and Kontesa Nera won again deservingly so.
We have no reason to be unhappy with the tournament outcome which is just foreplay to the main event - Croatian championship. We also had two players selected to the best team. Mirna Vučković was considered as a player who will strengthen our team and has confirmed that evaluation by being the top scorer and the best line player. Anja Vida Lukšić was the best left wing and the second best scorer proving she is the present and the future of Croatian beach handball. We're both happy and proud that we had two teams in girls 2006. competition. In cooperation with ŽRK Gorica and their coach Lukrecija we formed those two teams who finished second and fourth. It was a festival of emotions - happiness, laughter, screams, tears, and sadness due to defeat. The girls had fun and we hope they will play long into the future. For the first time since 2008. we didn't have a men's team. The reason being so is that our player Prka was getting married. Therefore, our start will be later in the year than usual. The biggest surprise and upset was the early knockout of Detono Zagreb by a Danish team HEI Beachhandball which eventually finished second. The third was BHC Sesvete and fourth the national team of Sweden.
